DC has officially begun its search for its Batgirl. Deadline is reporting that executives are expected to test a group of actresses for the highly coveted role.
The report notes that test deals are still being figured out, but that those expected to test for the role include Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, and Leslie Grace. Deadline has also heard Haley Lu Richardson’s name included in potential test deals, but that she might have bowed out before the testing process fully began. Warner Bros. and DC Films had no comment when reached out to by Deadline.
Despite being pretty tight-lipped about the upcoming film, we do know that DC Films will release both Batgirl and its upcoming Zatanna film on HBO Max. While no plot information is known at the time, the film is expected to feature Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, as she takes up the mantle of Batgirl.
A standalone Batgirl film has actually been in the works at Warner Bros. for several years. Warner Bros. originally enlisted Joss Whedon to write and direct the movie in 2017. However, the project was shelved after he vacated the director’s a year later. But the film got a second chance when WB hired Birds of Prey and Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson to take her own pass at the script.
