A new project is in development from producers Selena Gomez, Tanya Saracho and Gabriela Revilla Lugo. The trio are teaming up to create a comedy series spin on John Hughes’ classic 1984 coming-of-age film Sixteen Candles.
The half-hour series will be titled 15 Candles, and it will follow “four young Latinas in high school, navigating feelings of invisibility while exploring what it means to leave childhood behind as quinceañera season approaches.”
Saracho, under her Ojalá Production banner, and Lugo write and executive produce 15 Candles, while Gomez also executive produces under her July Moon Productions.
This sounds like it just has the name in common with the original, so I don’t think it really needs any association with the film. It sounds like a solid story that is good enough to stand on its own. I like teen comedies, so I will add it to my watch list. 15 Candles is set at Peacock.
