James Gunn Had ‘No Rules’ for R-Rated The Suicide Squad

Warner Bros.’ upcoming film The Suicide Squad is set to be one of the more raunchy comic book films in recent memory. Being an R-rated film, director James Gunn had much more freedom to go as far as he wanted to with the film, and according to him, it’s something he took advantage of.

Speaking to Empire in a recent interview ahead of the film’s release later this year, Gunn praised the no-holds-barred approach of the film, saying that he was happy to be able to essentially do whatever he pleased when it came to planning on how the film would come together.

“On The Suicide Squad I could just go anywhere I wanted to go,” Gunn said. “I mean, Marvel really lets me have a lot of freedom, but I’m still making a PG-13 movie. So I just loved the whole no-holds-barred approach of being able to make this enormous movie – with no rules!”

Judging by the brief glimpses of the film we’ve seen, it does seem like Gunn had a great time making the film, something producer Peter Safran corroborates in the same interview.

“He’s said this was the most fun he’s ever had making a movie, and that joy bled into the entire production,” Safran said. “It was a joyful experience because it’s really an unedited version of James Gunn.”
