EastEnders’ Stevie Basaula quits Isaac Baptiste role

EastEnders cast member Stevie Basaula is leaving the BBC soap, with the actor becoming the seventh star to depart in the last year.

Stevie, who has already filmed his final scenes as his character Isaac Baptiste, was known for his on-screen relationship with Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold).

Last year, his storyline saw Isaac have an episode of poor mental health after he stopped taking his medication for schizophrenia.

On his departure, Stevie said: ‘What a dream come true! Grateful to have spent over two years on one of the biggest shows in the country, there’s nothing like it.

‘Thank you for everything you’ve given me. I’ve learnt so much during my time and I’m proud to have been a part of some important work and to have made friends and memories that I’ll cherish for a long time.

‘EastEnders has been an essential part of my growth both as a young man and an actor, and I’m now excited and feel ready to explore this next chapter of my career.’

EastEnders boss Kate Oates added: ‘Stevie has been a huge asset to EastEnders during his time here; not least through his incredible performance across Isaac’s schizophrenia story.

‘As a member of the Trueman family, he will always be a part of one of our most iconic families.

‘We will miss him, and wish him well in his new ventures.’

Last week it emerged Zack Morris, 23, who plays Keegan Baker, was also leaving the soap.

The news was announced via the EastEnders official social media on Wednesday, with the BBC drama noting Keegan will depart Walford later this year.

Zack said in a statement: ‘After five beautiful years on this incredible show, I have made the tough decision to leave Walford and give Keegan Butcher-Baker some well-earned rest.

The announcement of his departure came just months after his co-star and his on-screen wife Maisie Smith, 20, also announced her exit from EastEnders, after 13 years on the show.

Maisie, who played Tiffany Butcher, reportedly left after getting a number of big money offers for other projects – following her stint on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2020.

Meanwhile, Danny Dyer, 44, who plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, announced last month that he would be leaving the soap after nine years.

A spokesperson said: ‘Danny will be leaving EastEnders when his contract comes to an end later this year.

‘Danny has made Mick Carter an iconic character which we shall always be grateful for, however we won’t be saying goodbye just yet as there’s still quite some time – and plenty of explosive drama for Mick – to come before he departs Walford. ‘

Also last month, it emerged Ruhtxjiaïh Bèllènéa, who plays Mila Marwa, and her on-screen sister Kioni (Florisa Kamara) would be leaving just over a year after Ruhtxjiaïh joined EastEnders.

The news came after the recent departure of actress Priya Davdra, who was Mila’s girlfriend Iqra Ahmed on the soap.
