DISCOVERY Shows the Real-Life Holodeck Used To Shoot The Series — GeekTyrant

I’ve got an awesome new behind the scenes featurette for Star Trek: Discovery for you to watch today that shows off the “real-life holodeck” that is used to when shooting the series. The video features interviews with the cast and crew that about an “AR wall” that was installed at the show’s Toronto studio when production began on the series’ fourth season.

This AR wall was built by effects house Pixomondo, and it’s a massive 30-foot-by-70-foot LED screen wrapped around a studio set. This is similar to the Volume that is being used to shoot the live-action Star Wars shows.

With this technology, VFX artists can project landscapes and objects onto the screen and have them react to camera focus. This allows the actors to see the environment they they are acting in and they are also able to get all of these visuals in camera.

For those who’ve dreamed of visiting a Holosuite, take a look behind the scenes at the real holodeck-like AR wall used in the filming of Season 4. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), and Emily Coutts (Keyla Detmer), along with the director, producers, camera crew, and lighting and special effects crew of the series discuss this exciting new technology.

This kind of filmmaking tech has got to make it so much more fun shooting these kinds of projects. Actors have always talked about how much it sucks working on green screen stages, but it looks like green screen is going to be a thing of the past. Check out the video below!
