Xbox and Warner Bros. were soliciting ideas for the Space Jam: A New Legacy tie-in video game in December 2020 and have finally reported back on what they settled on. Space Jam: A New Legacy – The Game will be a side-scrolling beat-em-up that will launch exclusively on Game Pass Ultimate on July 1, a full 15 days before the film hits HBO Max and theaters. It will then become free-to-play on the Microsoft Store (which is available on PC, iOS, and Android) on July 15. There’s no word on if it will come to other platforms, too.
Bugs Bunny and LeBron James unveiled this game in action on Xbox’s website and YouTube channel. The above trailer shows LeBron, Bugs, and Lola fighting in a 2D brawler similar to Streets of Rage; a style quite different from the first Space Jam game that hit the original PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and MS-DOS. Two contest winners decided the game’s general direction. One winner suggested the genre while the other submitted their ideas for some gameplay mechanics. Xbox will show more gameplay on a livestream scheduled for July 1 at 11 a.m. PT, the day the game comes out for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.
Digital Eclipse is the studio behind the game. The team is known for its retro titles like the Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection, Blizzard Arcade Collection, Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection, and Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King, which is also a bundle of old school titles. There’s obviously a pattern here but Space Jam: A New Legacy – The Game is an entirely new game.
Microsoft also revealed some exclusive and wireless Space Jam-branded Xbox controllers, too. These three gamepads are (from left to right) called Goon Squad, Tune Squad, and Serververse. They will be $69.99 each when they come out on July 8 through Amazon and the Microsoft Store.
