6 New Albums You Should Listen to Now: The War on Drugs, Megan Thee Stallion, and More

Theon Cross: Intra-I [New Soil/Marathon]

Intra-I is the latest solo album from Theon Cross, who handles the tuba low ends in Sons of Kemet. He joined the band for Black to the Future earlier this year after releasing his own Fyah in 2019. On Intra-I, Cross pivots into multilayered arrangements of processed tuba and electronics that explore subjects like the legacy of the first-generation Caribbean diaspora in the United Kingdom. The project’s guest vocalists include Shumba Maasai, Remi Graves, and Oren Marshall.

Eris Drew: Quivering in Time [T4T LUV NRG]

The Chicago DJ Eris Drew decamped to a cabin in New Hampshire during the COVID-19 shutdown, where she began broadcasting DJ sets from a clearing in the forest. The nine-song collection, Quivering in Time, was written, recorded, and mixed “as she stared into the forest through her studio window,” the album’s announcement noted.

Dear Laika: Pluperfect Mind [Memorials of Distinction/NNA Tapes]

As Dear Laika, 23-year-old Isabelle “Izzy” Thorn sings over fractured, swirling electronic compositions. Pluperfect Mind is her first release on a label, following several sets of tracks she’d self-released via Bandamp. She made the record while self-isolating in England’s southern counties during the pandemic, a period that also included the beginning of her gender transition.
