ALICE IN WONDERLAND Takes You to Wonderland — GeekTyrant

Funko Games has released the latest expansion for their game Funkoverse, Funkoverse: Alice in Wonderland. The game can be played by itself or combined with other Funkoverse sets for an even crazier time. Funko Games was kind enough to send me a copy to review. Inside, you get two Pop! Figures: Alice and the Queen of Hearts, fun Flamingo Mallet items that the figures can hold, and everything else you need to play.

This expansion is my introduction to Funkoverse and I definitely see some charm. For starters, there are a variety of ways to play the game. The expansion comes with 4 difference scenarios, each with different rules and objectives. If you haven’t played the game before, they do have a scenario in the rulebook that plays out a lot like a game of Chess. It helps you get used to many of the different basic mechanics of Funkoverse. While it does accomplish that goal, I did not enjoy it as a two-player game-mode. The scenarios were a lot more fun though. In Alice in Wonderland, there’s obviously a scenario where you play croquet using flamingo mallets and it was fun to see that each color had a different ability. This scenario was a lot of fun as a two-player game.

In Funkoverse, each character has different abilities, and I don’t know that I can stress this enough, read your abilities over and over again. The abilities can be extremely useful when you remember to use them. I also didn’t feel like they were particularly unbalanced which is nice.

The Pop! figures you get are smaller than standard-sized ones, but still good quality which really begs the question of how they can sell this for only $24.99.

I do have one complaint about the game though. I felt like there were some ambiguously written lines in the rules. For instance, in the rules for the croquet game, it talks about if a ball would enter a square with another character it stops and the character moves. I wasn’t sure if that meant the ball first entered the square the character was in before stopping or not. I assume the former, but this could’ve been worded a little clearer. In addition, during the introductory game, you have to knock out an opposing character, but I wasn’t entirely sure if the Kitten and Playing Card characters counted for that.

If you enjoy Funko Pop! figures, I think Funkoverse can be a lot of fun. Alice in Wonderland offers some fun new maps and scenarios (I did really enjoy the croquet scenario) and the characters were really cool too.
