Why Did the Algorithm Choose This ‘Silo’ Season 2 Character?

Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead for Silo Season 2.Silo Season 2 ends on a fiery note, and one that leaves many things up in the air for the upcoming Season 3. Among the many questions we have is one related to the Sims family: Why did the Algorithm only allow Camille (Alexandria Riley) to stay in the vault and not her husband Robert (Common) and their son Anthony (Oscar Coleman)? They are in the middle of a rebellion that is threatening the survival of their silo, so, given how Robert is the Judge and has just become Bernard Holland’s (Tim Robbins) shadow, shouldn’t he be allowed in, too? What is so special about Camille that made the Algorithm single her out?

Camille Has Proven Her Worth as a Potential Leader of the Silo

By the end of Season 2, Silo 18 is in a downward spiral that may very well result in its destruction. The rebellion led by Mechanical is out of control, with people openly attempting to leave the silo, Mayor Bernard is disillusioned and wants to go out, and Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) has resigned as his shadow, meaning that there is no one at the helm. Bernard makes Robert Sims his shadow because, at this point, nothing matters, and Robert, desperate to protect his family and save the silo, takes them to the vault, hoping to find answers. Instead, he meets the Algorithm, who tells him to leave and only allows Camille to stay.

As central as Robert is to Silo, Season 2 proves that he has always been great at following Bernard’s orders, but doesn’t really know how to act in his own interest, and, therefore, is not a good choice to lead or save the silo. On the other hand, Camille has risen from a minor character to play a pivotal role in safeguarding her husband’s position and playing both sides of the rebellion to keep them from destroying everything. She manages to outsmart even Bernard and, later, pretend she is innocent, all the while acting without her husband even knowing it. She has been underestimated by everyone and is the only character to keep a clear head while the world crumbles, a quality that all leaders should have.

The third season is currently shooting.

With no one around in an official leadership position, Camille is the ideal candidate, and, now, a theory states that the Algorithm may have chosen her for the job to avoid activating the Safeguard protocol and destroying the silo. Having worked in IT and, previously, as a Judicial Raider, she understands the power dynamics in the silo and how to act according to them. In such a chaotic context, it doesn’t matter whether Bernard has made Robert his shadow; now, it’s all up to the Algorithm, and Camille is the perfect choice, a rational person who understands the dynamics and the people of the silo, as well as what needs to be done to save it.

The Algorithm Choosing Camille To Lead the Silo May Lead to a Conflict With Juliette

What is interesting about the theory that the Algorithm has chosen Camille to lead the silo is that, as it happens, the silo is pacified by Juliette Nichols’ (Rebecca Ferguson) unexpected return. At the beginning of the season, she becomes a martyr, but her coming back will likely turn her into an almost messianic figure — as well as the people’s top choice for the next mayor. If the Algorithm is truly choosing Camille as the next leader, it means that there is yet another conflict on the horizon for Silo 18.

Juliette has never been attracted to power, but she isn’t one to shy away from her responsibilities. With all the knowledge she now has about what is happening to the other silos, it’s unlikely that she wouldn’t accept being elected mayor. If there is someone in her way, she would probably try to get them to her side, but it all depends on who it is. If Camille is indeed being chosen to lead the silo, she has proven to be ambitious before — Robert wouldn’t be anywhere near his current position if it weren’t for her. Being accepted into the vault also means learning the truth about what and who is really behind the silos, the kind of knowledge that will surely prompt her to cling to her position to save everything, especially with her family’s survival at stake.

Something that Silo has always done really well is expanding on the story told in the original Hugh Howey Silo book trilogy. The series has made this universe much more complex by adding new characters and giving some pre-existing ones expanded storylines. Camille Sims is one such case. She rises from a minor character in Season 1 to a potential leader in Season 2, but she doesn’t exist in the books. In fact, Robert’s role is much smaller than in the Apple TV+ series, too. This means any theory concerning her future is based solely on the series, which is a huge merit to its writing. The Algorithm (who may also be more than meets the eye) may have chosen her as a potential leader, or perhaps it saw in her someone who could crack the secret of the silos and decided to exterminate her — who knows?

Silo is available to stream on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
